Foreseeing the need to power agriculture to boost yield, a group of visionaries comprising of Shri S.C.Agarwal and Shri V.K.Agarwal made a modest beginning in 1965 and produced 21 diesel engines to be used as prime mover in Diesel pumpset. The beginning of their contribution to usher in the 'Green Revolution' had been made. From then on their was no looking back. Through sheer dedication and commitment to quality, the product image and volumes started climbing up. To the rang were added the centrifugal pumps and the Diesel engine electric generating sets.

SMT, manufacturing over 45, 000 units, figures among the top three manufacturers of Diesel engines with a sustained market share of over 10% amongst about 800 manufacturers.
